Building on the success of its Recommended badge-winning Mu-so wireless music system (HFC 391), Naim has unveiled the Mu-so Qb. Described by the manufacturer as combining Naim’s priorities of high-quality, engaging sound and understated design, Mu-so Qb appears in a more compact chassis and boasts a speaker arrangement of five offset and angled drivers (two tweeters, two mids and a woofer), although the bass port of its sibling has been ditched to keep size down. Instead, two tuned pistonic bass radiators work alongside a custom-made woofer driven by the 100W amplifier. The Mu-so Qb can connect to your home wi-fi and can wirelessly stream hi-res music stored on your network or browse and play tracks using Spotify Connect, Tidal, internet radio or Airplay.

When it first debuted, Arcam's irDAC proved to be a mighty impresive digital-to-anlaogue converter, winning a Group Test back in HFC 379. And now Arcam has unveilled the follow up to the succesful DAC in the shape of irDAC-II. The asyncronous USB DAC can also be utilised as a digital preamp, headphone amplifier and Bluetooth streamer. At its heart sits the ESS Sabre ES9016K2M DAC chip, while the headphone amplifier stage is taken from Arcam's flagship A49 amplifier.

Adored by hi-fi fans and DJs alike around the world, it was a sad day in 2010 when Technics finally announced that it would cease production of its iconic SL-1200 direct-drive turntable due to dwindling vinyl sales and the riseof more practical music formats. The SL-1200 was originally built for hi-fi fans when it launched in 1972, but its consistent performance, robust build and unique pitch-shifting ability made it the go-to deck for many DJs, who managed to prolong the deck's life long after many hi-fi fans had sold their record collections to car boot sales. Even so, its departure from the market was a surprise and perhaps even a little premature given the growing interest we've seen in the vinyl market in the last few years. Thankfully though, the legendary vinyl spinner looks set to make a comeback later this year.

While all-in-one systems come in many shapes and sizes, generally they follow a similar set of conventions with smaller scale woofers, tweeters and amps packed together underthe same roof, trading levels ofsonic output for greater degrees of convenience. But as we saw withits Ensemble package last year(HFC 386), following conventionsis not really the Devialet way. From the outset the distinctive Silver Phantom’s egg-like case immediately challenges your preconceptions of what a hi-fi system should look like. Each one housesits own internal amp, DAC, wi-fi streamer and speakers, allowing itto fly solo as a standalone systemor work alongside more Phantomsas part of a two or more channel installation through Devialet’s free Spark app and Dialog wi-fi controller (£249).

Norwegian brand Hegel has many years experience in implementing DAC technology, both within its highly regarded integrated amps and standalone digital converters. So the advent of a new ‘reference DAC’ has many eager to hear more. In an eraof DACs becoming smaller and more portable for a new generation of headphone users, it’s refreshing to see Hegel buck this trend and produce a full-width option that unashamedly seeks to put audio quality first. The Norwegian company is a big believer in making its products convenient and simple to use, and the HD30 can be considered a veritable ‘plug ‘n’ play’ hub of digital connectivity.

Alongside the vinyl boom, the growth in headphone sales has been one of the big drivers for the audio industry in recent years. As well as headphones themselves, their supporting ancillaries have been on the up, and the latest manufacturer to join the fray is Myryad with the Z40 headphone amplifier. As part of the Z Mini series, the Z40 is a half-width component representing Myryad’s entry level but with the functionality that matches its full-size components. Like its larger sibling it also sports the ‘DC5’ (Double Complementary Cross-Coupled Cascoded Current feedback) circuit used in a number of the company’s products and reworks it for headphone use.

The BBC has today unveiled a new music app that pulls together music clips from across the network's TV shows and radio stations into one central searchable location. The new app, which is available on Android and iOS-enabled smartphones and tablets consists of live performances, DJ and presenter curated playlists and interviews with musicians. Users will also be able to search for and play all tracks broadcast on BBC Radio over the past week and add favourites to their own playlist. It's also claimed that the app will learn the personal preferences of users and then deliver a choice of tunes that have been individually tailored to the user's taste.

Back in 1988 Tracy Chapman famously sang Talkin’ Bout A Revolution and here we are some 28 years later still talking about the same subject matter, although this Revolution is one that everyone would welcome into their life. We speak, of course, of Tannoy’s rather wonderful Revolution XT speaker range, consisting of the XT 6 standmount, XT 6F and XT 8F floorstanders, XT Mini and XT C centre for home cinema. The range features the Dual Concentric driver that has given Tannoy its distinctive sound over the years. For the uninitiated, time for a quick recap.
