Hegel has unveiled its first-ever full-sized digital-to-analogue converter in the shape of the new HD30 DAC, which the company is describing as its reference DAC. This being Hegel, though, the intention has been to come up with a product that is new and quite unlike anything that's currently available. And so Hegel describes how the development of the HD30 meant it had to tweak and improve on the best measurement equipment in the world first, before technically addressing the things its engineeers had heard and then tweaking them. First up was the noise floor.

Specialist audio brand Hegel, has garnered a reputation for doing things its own way, and so it’s no surprise to see the Norwegian name unveil plans to introduce a CD player just as many brands look set to trim down their silver disc-spinning models. Originally unveiled at the High End Show in Munich in May, the Mohican is a CD player without any digital inputs. There’s a true 75ohm BNC-output connector for transport-only use. The CD-only player uses a dedicated audio drive mechanism, and not a CD-ROM, and employs Hegel’s own servo boards which it claims have minimal impact on the digital signal read off a CD.

Replacing the H80 integrated amplifier (which was HFC’s first introduction to the Norwegian company’s wares back in issue 391 and the first of many Recommended badge winners), Hegel unveiled its H90 to an expectant audience back in May at the High End Show in Munich. Described by Hegel’s Anders Ertzeid as “A Rost that’s been scaled down with a slightly smaller power supply. It’s more cleaner like the Rost, but can deliver more power than the H80”. Released under the banner “Better than yours”, the new integrated amplifier is driven by the manufacturer’s new and improved SoundEngine2, which is claimed to reduce distortion even more than previous Hegel offerings.
