FiiO unveils BTR7 portable headphone amplifier

The BTR7 is FiiO’s new portable headphone amplifier, offering the option of either wired or wireless transfer of your audio via USB or Bluetooth. With support for a wide range of Bluetooth codecs, including aptX HD and LDAC, it wirelessly handles up to 24-bit/96kHz resolution PCM files. It is available in two flavours: the BTR7 (USB-C Version) and BTR7 (Lightning Version).

Sharing design cues with other FiiO products, such as the M11S portable music player, the amp features a 1.3in colour screen that displays information including audio bit-rate, volume level, Bluetooth codec and more.

FiiO says that the BTR7 is the first portable Bluetooth amplifier to utilise two THX AAA-28 amplifiers. As a result, it delivers a fully balanced audio design, with each channel driven separately to: “deliver 88 percent more single-ended power output and 30 percent more balanced power output compared with previous models”.

FiiO makes use of a Dual DAC chipset design, featuring a pair of ESS9219 Sabre digital-to-analogue converters, with a 32-bit ‘HyperStream’ architecture. It delivers a claimed signal-to-noise ratio of 118dB via its 3.5mm single-ended and 4.4mm balanced headphone outputs.

As an alternative to Bluetooth, the FiiO BTR7 can be used in a wired configuration as a portable USB DAC/amplifier by accessing the ‘One-Click Dongle Mode’. FiiO says you: “simply connect your smartphone, laptop or other compatible device to the BTR7 via the USB-C cable. One press of the ‘Charge’ button will allow the BTR7 to switch in and out of its USB dongle mode, allowing you to enjoy audio files up to 32-bit/384kHz (PCM) or DSD256 and it’s MQA compatible.”

The BTR7 can switch the USB to a USB 1.0 driverless interface so it will work with older devices. Functions and settings can also be accessed in the dedicated FiiO Control app, available for both Android and iOS devices. This incorporates a number of additional features including a 10-band graphic equaliser.

The BTR7 claims battery life of up to nine hours and comes bundled with a black leatherette protective case, a Type-A-to-Type-C USB charging cable, USB Type-C-to-Type-C cable (included in both versions) and USB Type-C-to-Lightning cable (included with the BTR7 Lightning version only). The FiiO BTR7 (USB-C version) is priced at £175, the Lightning at £195.
