New UK affordable speaker range

Many hi-fi fans will have started out with a pair of Wharfedale speakers, and if your passion began in the eighties then you're likely to be familiar with the Huntingdon brand's popular Diamond speaker. As its most famous design from that era, the Diamond started off as one product and grew into a whole family. It still continues today, of course, with the Diamond 200 Series – see our Diamond 230 and 220 loudspeaker reviews in issues 395 and 402 respectively – and has evolved through many incarnations with a number of significant improvements. Why all the talk of the Diamond Series we hear you cry, well Wharfedale engineers have been hard at work on the new five-strong Reva Series, which borrows many of the design principles that are used in the latest Diamond series, but raises the bar both sonically and aesthetically.

Following on from its desktop DS-1 Bluetooth loudspeakers, Wharfedale has unveiled its next-generation DS-2 follow up. Featuring a 19mm silk dome tweeter and 75mm mid/bass driver, the wireless DS-2 outputs a claimed 2x 15W continuos power (2x 30W peak) and is designed for hook up to PCs and mobile devices. Connectivity includes a 3. 5mm analogue stereo input (on the master speaker) along with the aptX version of Bluetooth.

Producing a new loudspeaker every 12 months is no mean feat, but that's precisely what high-end manufacturer Wilson Audio has consistently managed to do over the last five years. And now we're treated to the latest innovation, playfully named Yvette – a three-way design that sits between the entry-level Sabrina and Sasha 2 floorstanders. Described by the company as drawing from traditional Wilson virtues including dynamic resolution and soundstaging, Yvette derives its core technology from its enviable R&D department and is modestly described as the most advanced and musically refined single-enclosure loudspeaker in the company's history. Hand-built in Utah, the three-way floorstander boasts a more compact form factor than what's come before and perhaps more significantly, it's more affordable.

Wilson Audio is perhaps best known for its high-end floorstanding loudspeaker designs with their uncompromising levels of performance and money-no-object designs. We've been lucky enough to experience some of the brand's extraordinary models at The Hi-Fi Show Live showcases runby our sister title Hi-Fi News, and the brand is sure to draw eager crowds once again to its UK distributor Absolute Sounds' listening rooms at this year's event running from 10-11 November – advanced tickets on sale now through eventbrite. co. uk.

Wires, huh yeah, what are they good for?Absolutely nothing!” So goes the classic Edwin Starr song. Okay, so maybe we’re a little confused about the actual words to Starr’s classic slice of soul, but the point remains – having a mass of cables trailing from your hi-fito your speakers can be a unnecessarily messy business. Of course, wireless technology has been around for some time, but its been decidedly shaky to say the least, until now that is. .

JAYS might be a new name to some HFC readers, but the Swedish manufacturer specialising in in-ear monitors has been around since 2006. Its innovative dual-balance armature two-way miniature monitor system fitted inside of its first set of in-ears was perhaps a little ahead of its time when it was launched shortly after the company was formed, but jump forward to today, and JAYS is one of a number of brands that’s adopted the twin speaker approach with considerable success. We were deeply impressed when we got our hands (or should that be ears?) on the q-JAYS Reference in-earphone back in issue 408. And it’s this very model that you stand a chance of winning in this month’s competition, albeit with an additional inline remote and built-in microphone for control of iOS devices.

After years in the wilderness it looks as though vinyl is finally coming in from the cold. Vinyl sales are higher than they’ve been since 1997 when Britpop ruled the world and many people are universally shunning poor quality downloads and streams in favour of the black stuff. You see, there’s nothing quite like the routine of removing an LP from its sleeve, placing it onto a turntable and then putting the needle into the groove and sitting back to enjoy your music as it really should be heard. But what’s that, you don’t own a decent record player? We might just be able to help you out with that.

As icons go, there are few that can match the timeless majesty of Rega’s Planar 3turntable. While this midrange model has gone by a few names over the years, each incarnation has always pertained to the number three and the latest revision of the classic belt-driven, low-mass unsuspended plinth turntable is its most substantial yet. The perfect choice for those starting out on their vinyl adventure, it sounds every bit like a Rega should. By which we mean every spin of an LP dishes out a performance that is both assured and fun.

Pop quiz time. What’s the biggest growing sector within the hi-fi industry of the last four or five years? Bluetooth adaptors? Hi-res music streamers? Portable music players? No, give up? Would it come as a surprise if we were to reveal that headphones is the answer? Probably not given the fact thatthe rest of the page is filled with picturesof them. . .
