Following the launch of the flagship SL-1200G direct-drive turntable reviewed in HFC 418, the Japanese tech giant introduces two additional models, but with more wallet-friendly price tags. The SL-1200GR and the SL-1210GR decks have an identical specification, but come with silver and black plinth top plates respectively. The new turntables claim to utilise the same design principles as the flagship SL-1200G, but with slightly different materials and applications. Parts from the SL-1200G are newly developed, and the twin-rotor coreless direct-drive motor designed for the flagship deck is replaced here with a single-rotor design.

2015 will quite rightly be remembered as the year that vinyl made a comeback, but it was also a pretty impressive 12 months for music sales all round with UK consumers spending more on singles, albums and subscription music services than any year since 2011. In fact the only bad news was for music downloads, which suffered a considerable decline. In all, recorded music enjoyed £1. 06bn profit, which is a 3.

Unison Research has launched its Unico 90 integrated amp. Intended to sit under its flagship 150 model, the 90 is a valve and solid-state hybrid with a preamp stage that is built around an Alps volume control and input switching that decouples inactive inputs. The valve-based gain stage uses ECC83 and ECC81 tubes in Unison’s totem pole configuration. These are directly coupled to the output stage, which consists of three pairs of HEXFET output devices to give it a claimed power output of 2x 100W into 8ohm and 2x 160W into 4ohm.

The hybrid Unico range from Italian valve specialist Unison Research combines valves with other solid state devices to provide more power and features than traditional valve technology alone can offer. The Unico CD Due joins the range as the new flagship source, and shares the same 'three-panel' design of the range-topping Unico 150 amplifier. The CD player supports apt X Bluetooth streaming and also incoporates a DAC equipped with USB, S/PDIF, AES/EBU and Toslink inputs, which all route through the built-in ESS Sabre ES9018K2M chip. The USB input uses XMOS to handle PCM signals up to 384kHz and DSD256.

Like its namesake, Van den Hul’s new Stradivarius version of its Crimson phono cartridge is lovingly crafted by hand (by AJ Van den Hul himself, no less), but it really gets its name from the ‘Stradivarius Formula’ lacquer that coats its koa wood body – which is similar to what’s used for finishing the famous violins. The new moving-coil cartridge features 24-carat gold coils, a samarium-cobalt magnet, boron cantilever and a proprietary Van den Hul stylus. Each Crimson Stradivarius is built to order and can be customised to the buyer’s specific tastes and setup. It’s available to buy now for £3,999 and Van den Hul also offers a free 200-hour service check up.
