If the Scansonic name seems vaguely familiar it's because the brand has an illustrious history, being deeply rooted in Danish loudspeaker design and engineering. Scansonic goes back some 45 years to whenit was introduced as the name ona then-new line of loudspeakersfrom famous Danish drive-unit manufacturer ScanSpeak. Now owned by Dantax, the same parent company as Raidho, the brand’s loudspeakers are designed by the creator of the renowned Raidho range, acoustic designer Michael Børresen. As a result, Scansonic has plenty in common with the respected Raidho family DNA and pedigree, but at a fraction of the cost.

SDS first introduced the IsoPlatMat and IsoFeet in 2005, but now the business has reached a size where it no longer needs to be supported by Sound Damped Steel Ltd and so it has been re-branded and will now be known as Soundeck. The Soundeck turntable mat (pictured above) is now coated with vinyl so that it doesn¹t need a soft mat to protect the record. Meanwhile, its IsoFeet are now 25 percent thicker and available as rectangles or rounds in stainless or powder coated black finish. A machined damping puck made from SDS stainless steel laminate is also being produced.

Building on the success of its first ever digital headphone amplifier (the HDVD 800), Sennheiser has showcased its successor at the Tokyo Headphone Festival. The HDV 820 has an all-new digital section, which is powered by an ESS SABRE32 digital-to-analogue converter in a completely balanced topology. The DAC operates at up to 32-bit/384kHz PCM resolution and up to 12. 3MHz DSD and is claimed to provide unequalled dynamic range, ultra-low distortion and unmatched audio clarity.

Based on the HD 800 (Editor’s Choice award winner back in HFC 324), Sennheiser has unveiled its latest headphone, the HD 800 S. The new headphone, claims the manufacturer, has had the sound reproduction optimised through the innovative absorber tech that was introduced on the IE 800 (HFC 385). This does away with the masking effect that makes high-pitched effects difficult to hear at lower volumes. The 56mm transducer of the HD 800 also remains and the headphone comes with a 3m-long XLR4 cable.
